There were 52 M&A deals in 2011, including 11 completed in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, for $445 million in aggregate deal value.

The average deal size for the full year jumped to $29.6 million, up 25% from $23.8 million in 2010. According to Greenberg Advisors, the jump was not surprising because financial buyers - who often gravitate toward larger deals - were more active in 2011.

In the fourth quarter, key deals completed included Sherman Financial Group's acquisition of bankruptcy buyer B-Line and United Recovery Systems' acquisition of Plaza Associates.
