Responding to what it says is a rise in complaints from consumers about credit card surcharges, the Association of Banks in Malaysia is reminding merchants they are not allowed to impose such fees for credit card transactions, according to a statement from the trade group. The trade group plans to "deal very strictly with [surcharges imposed] by merchants," an association spokesperson says in the statement, providing no details. The central bank requires banks to clearly inform cardholders of all fees linked to their credit cards, the group says. "Under the central bank's operating regulations, banks have to display clearly their fees and charges on their application forms," the spokesperson says.
