MasterCard Adds Tokenization for App, Web, Private-Label Payments

MasterCard will begin offering tokenization for app, e-commerce and recurring payment programs as it expands MasterCard Digital Enablement Services (MDES).

MasterCard will allow banks to replace payment card account numbers with 16-digit tokens, according to a June 15 news release. Additionally, unique tokens will be made for each merchant.

Each of the tokens created through the new service will also carry extra security protection, the company said.

MasterCard is also adding tokenization support for private-label credit cards used in digital wallets. The card network is working with BJ's Wholesale Club, Kohl's and JCPenney as they launch mobile payments for their private label cardholders this year.

MasterCard will also partner with private-label credit card issuers Synchrony Financial and Citi Retail Services to support mobile payment and digital wallet services. The private-label tokenization service will begin in the third quarter of 2015.

Both of these expanded tokenization services were enabled through MDES. Launched in 2013, MDES has tokenized millions of accounts for use in digital wallet services, MasterCard said.
