“Mobile devices are rapidly transforming the point of sale experience, both for consumers and merchants, and the growth of this program demonstrates our long-term vision to provide technology and tools that support the transition of every mobile phone into a shopping device,” said Mung Ki Woo, group executive of mobile for MasterCard, in a press release.

Rival card network Visa recently introduced its Visa Ready Partner program. Visa’s program is designed to ensure that software, devices and other hardware used to initiate or accept Visa payments are compatible with Visa’s varied international requirements—a key point as mobile point of sale devices continue to expand. Visa Ready also provides a framework for collaboration with Visa, as well as guidance and best practices.
