Masterpass integrates into Phillips 66 app

The Masterpass digital wallet will become embedded into the My Phillips 66 app later this year, enabling customers to pay at the pump or in the convenience store.

At launch, Masterpass will be accepted through the app at the more than 6,500 Conoco-, Phillips 66- and 76-branded locations in the U.S.

“We are delighted to partner with Phillips 66 to reduce friction in travel,” Linda Kirkpatrick, executive vice president of U.S. merchants and acceptance for Mastercard, said in a Monday press release. “With the integration of Masterpass into the My Phillips 66, My Conoco and My 76 apps, we will enhance speed and security for consumers and allow them to fuel up and get back to their day.”

While Masterpass securely stores all payment information, including card details, shipping details, and payment preference, users of the app will still be able to locate stations, receive payment authorization and receive rewards.

For the past five years, Phillips 66 has positioned itself as a fuel retailer interested in mobile payments at the pump. The company joined the Merchant Customer Exchange retailer joint venture in 2013 to join others seeking a mobile wallet payment method that could bypass other traditional payment methods.

Even though the CurrentC wallet of MCX never publicly launched and MCX folded, Phillips 66 stayed on the mobile path in joining Shell and Starbucks as some of the first major retailers to embrace the Chase Pay mobile wallet in 2016.

“With Masterpass integrated into our Phillips 66, Conoco and 76 apps, consumers will enjoy a simple and secure fueling experience,” Rod Palmer, general manager of marketing services for Phillips 66, said in the release. “Masterpass will give our consumers more choice when buying gasoline and goods at Phillips 66, Conoco and 76 branded sites.”
