A Mississippi town has hired collection agency American Municipal Services to pursue $88,000 in unpaid fines, which includes $50,000 owed to the state, according to Ackerman, Miss. Town Clerk Debbie Boley.

The contract will not cost the town any money as a 25% charge will be added to each overdue fine. The town's board of alderman heard presentations this month from both American Municipal Services and MS Warrant Network before making its choice.

American Municipal Services' representatives will contact people owing fines. The board had discussed not sending people to collections who currently are making payments on fines.

Ackerman Police Chief Kevin Stark, before the decision was made to hire the collection agency, told the board his department could use locating services to send letters of payment to people with delinquent fines.
