Commuters in the city of Mumbai will have to go through a process of documentation and verification before using their contactless smart cards on the city’s soon to be launched Metro and Monorail service.
According to a Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority spokesperson, commuters will be issued smart cards for the Metro Rail and Monorail service only after their details will are verified.
“This would prove helpful for security agencies to track criminal activities and individuals,” he tells PaymentsSource.
The official further adds that the authority is still in discussions over the smart card payment facility and vendors have to be yet decided.
Further, with the help of verified smart cards, various types of data such as traveling habits of passengers, peak hour per direction passenger flow, and busy routes can be collated, according to the transit official.
The official further says that even for commuters who successfully apply with partner banks for a dual function debit or credit card—that also can be used for transit— there will be a secondary process of verification with the authority.
“Only then will we activate the fare account on the card,” he adds. “Otherwise, [the commuter] would not be able to use the card for paying fares.”
