Bank customers can deposit checks into their savings or checking accounts from home with a new software product NCR Corp. introduced this month. The software, called NCR Aptra Consumer Passport, can be integrated with any financial institutions' online banking site, giving consumers the ability to deposit checks remotely, a service previously offered only to businesses, NCR says. Once a financial institution integrates Aptra Consumer Passport with its online banking site, banking customers will be able to access it through the financial institution's Web site, NCR spokesperson Jeff Dudash tells ATM&Debit News, a CardLine sister publication. The service addresses the growing demand for self-service, NCR says. "We live in a world in which consumers are using more self-service technologies than ever before, and they are also demanding a wider range of self-service options," says Brian Bailey, vice president of financial industry marketing at Dayton, Ohio-based NCR. To use the service, accountholders must use a Twain-based flatbed scanner to scan the fronts and backs of checks they want to deposit. Twain, a standard industry interface, enables scanners to communicate with financial institutions' software applications, NCR says. After they have scanned their endorsed checks, the accountholders send the images to their financial institutions via their online-banking sites for processing and clearing. The software addresses risk monitoring for remote deposit as outlined by Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, NCR says. Last month, the council listed the responsibilities of senior managers overseeing remote deposit capture at their financial institutions.
