New Delhi Testing Parking System Accepting Cards

The Indian capital city of New Delhi is testing a new, automated parking-management system that will accept payment cards from motorists either onsite or online, an official from the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Centre tells PaymentsSource.

The new system will fix problems associated with unregulated parking, in which cars had encroached on road space and added to the city’s traffic woes by blocking arterial roads, according to the official.

The new system’s parking kiosks will accept magnetic stripe credit cards and specially issued prepaid smart cards from motorists, who also will have the ability to manage their parking payments and access online, the official says.

“What they will be able to do is go online to a parking space and book their slot online after checking availability,” he says. “This will apply to the major parking spots in the city, like the business districts.”

The first kiosks have been installed in a suburb of the city as part of a pilot that will run through March. Results of the pilot will determine whether or how the system will expand. “There is a German company who has worked on the system, but I can only disclose the name after the pilot is over,” the official adds.

New Delhi has 6.5 million registered vehicles, according to the city’s transportation department.
