PNC Financial Services Group Inc. is opening 6,000 new Virtual Wallet accounts per week, the Pittsburgh banking company's chairman and chief executive James Rohr said June 3.
Rohr cited these signups for the online-focused Virtual Wallet account as an example of the growth in consumers' use of electronic banking services. PNC began offering the Virtual Wallet account in 2008. It is a package of three linked accounts for checking, short-term savings and long-term savings.
"It's just growing like mad," Rohr said at the Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in New York.
Rohr also said that the company recently rolled out a feature for its mobile banking customers that allows them to deposit checks using their smartphone's camera.
The feature is available on PNC's mobile banking apps for Apple Inc.'s iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad 2.
