A breach of RBS WorldPay's computer system by hackers potentially has compromised the personal information of 1.5 million prepaid cardholders and the social security numbers of 1.1 million individuals, according to processor RBS WorldPay. The breach affected payroll cards and open-loop gift cards, roughly 100 of which have experienced actual fraud, an RBS spokesperson tells CardLine. RBS WorldPay identified the problem Nov. 10, states the spokesperson, who declined to provide details about how the breach occurred, citing an ongoing investigation. RBS is notifying affected individuals. It also is deactivating gift cards that have not been purchased and is removing them from retail locations. Gift cards that consumers already have purchased will retain their value, the spokesperson says. RBS is resetting personal identification numbers for all PIN-enabled cards, the spokesperson says. RBS WorldPay, formerly RBS Lynk, is the U.S. payment-processing arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
