Franco-German card vendor Sagem Orga GmbH says it is taking part in an Australian test of Near Field Communication technology. The test involves 200 consumers and 12 merchants in Melbourne and kicked off in August (CardLine Global, 29 Aug.). Sagem says it is supplying SIM cards for the mobile phones in the project. The test also involves Australian mobile Operator Telstra Corp., National Australian Bank, Visa Inc. and United States-based point-of-sale terminal vendor Hypercom Corp. The test is scheduled to run over several months, but participants have released no firm schedule. The test enables consumers to use phones to make contactless transactions of less than AU$35 (US$22.50 or 17.70 euros).
