Shopify Redesigns Its Apple Mobile Payments App

E-commerce technology provider Shopify has launched a redesigned version of its iOS mobile app, adding features designed to enable store management and mobile payments.

The Ottawa-based Shopify is offering a free card reader to accept payments away from a cash register or Shopify's existing iPad-based software. The card reader combines with other functions such as store management for online merchants and point of sale management for brick-and-mortar retailers.

Online merchants can receive notifications of each new order as it comes in, and can dispatch shipping notifications. The app also includes inventory management features such as using the iPhone's camera to snap product photos to add items. The point of sale features enable changes to pricing. A number of companies that operate in the mobile point of sale market have added merchant services features.

"This is an important step forward towards creating a commerce platform that enables our merchants to sell their products anywhere, whether it's online, in-store or on-the-go," says Chris Long, product marketing manager for Shopify, in a blog post on the company's website.

Shopify's new app is available to U.S. merchants, and the company plans to expand to other markets and devices, including Android. Shopify also recently added payment processing to its online storefronts and analytics to track sales performance.
