The new system uses technology from Ingenico, and retails for $249. The hardware uses a Bluetooth connection to communicate with the ShopKeep app, which runs on a tablet.

"We are seeing strong demand for Apple Pay acceptance among small businesses, and ShopKeep is a popular POS option in that category," Greg Burch, vice-president of mobility, business development and ISV relationships at Ingenico Group, said in a Dec. 15 press release. Ingenico developed the POS system for ShopKeep.

The new reader will be available starting next year. ShopKeep plans to offer the device for free to new ShopKeep merchants during a promotional period.
