In November last year, the Auckland Regional Transport Authority announced the signing of an agreement with French technology vendor Thales Group, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Auckland Regional Council for a “super” transport ticket for Auckland (see story).

Through the initiative, the authority would offer a single ticket consumers may use on trains, buses and ferries. The planners expect the project to be operational by September, before the Rugby World Cup in October.

Despite being one of Thales’ rivals for the ticketing bid, Snapper was designated as the first third-party vendor to use the Thales system, which is being built.

The Thales system’s open architecture allows other ticketing operators’ systems to integrate with it, according to the transport authority’s website.

The collaboration between Snapper and Thales will enable passengers on NZ Bus’ Auckland buses to use the “super ticket” for payment of the fare, the authority noted in a new release. NZ Bus will install Snapper smart card readers next year, the ticketing provider said.

Snapper offers contactless transit cards that enable riders to store up to NZ$300 (US$205 or 140 euros) for bus trips. Consumers pay NZ$10 to purchase the cards and 25 New Zealand cents to add value to the card accounts.
