Petrov was most recently vice president of retail marketing at PayPal, where he was responsible for merchant marketing and launching PayPal into an offline retail environment—PayPal's retail point of sale efforts have been expanding over the past few months. Petrov was previously president of Lucerne Foods, the private-label consumer product brand subsidiary of grocery store chain Safeway Inc., and was a marketing executive at Nestlé.

Petrov's hire comes as Square increases its own focus selling mobile acceptance to larger merchants. Nearly 50% of Square's total payments are coming via iPad, Square said in its release announcing Petrov's hire.

"I look forward to bringing Square to merchants of all sizes, from local businesses to the largest retailers in the world," said Petrov in the release.

Square also recently hired Francoise Brougher, a former Google and Charles Schwab executive, to be its new business lead. The company also lost Rob von Behren, who left Square to join Braintree as a lead engineer.
