Taiwanese Banks Share Tech to Power Mobile Wallet

Fourteen banks in Taiwan have launched a mobile wallet using a shared technology platform developed by Mozido, marking one of the first rollouts of the Austin, Texas-based company’s global Host Card Emulation (HCE) solution.

The new mobile payments approach, called T-Wallet, leverages HCE and tokenization to support contactless payments in Taiwan via Android handsets, according to an Aug. 4 announcement from Taipei-based Taiwan Mobile Payment Co., a bank-led coalition supporting the effort.

TWMP said it's supplying participating banks with a software development kit enabling them to integrate the platform into their mobile payment apps.

More than a year ago, 27 Taiwan banks formed TWMP to collaborate on mobile payments technology and additional banks in the coalition will eventually add support for T-Wallet, the organization said.

HCE's carrier agnostic contactless payments technology is gaining steam among banks as financial institutions look to build their own mobile wallets as an alternative to third party initiatives. Recent HCE deployments include a Czech bank and a collaborative multi-bank wallet in Denmark.
