The Thai government is providing credit cards to low-income taxi and passenger-van drivers affected by an increase in the price of the natural gas they use to fuel their vehicles.
Drivers may use the NGV (natural gas for vehicles) credit card only to buy fuel for their vehicles, according to a statement from the Krung Thai Bank Ltd., which is collaborating with the government’s Ministry of Energy for the project.
“Cards would come with a credit limit of 3,000 baht [US$95 or 74 euros], and this limit would be nonextendable,” a spokesperson for the Bangkok-based bank tells PaymentsSource. Cardholders also are eligible for discounts up to 2 baht for every kilogram of natural gas paid for with these cards.
The cards became available Dec. 1.
Previously, Thai taxi drivers could use a prepaid NGV Refill card to pay for fuel purchases, but the card did not support paying on credit or provide discounts.
