IMGCAP(1)]

Thales Group will provide a contactless fare-payment system for subway riders in Cairo under a deal signed Monday, a spokesperson for the France-based firm tells CardLine Global. The deal, worth 16 million euros (US$22.2 million), covers a contactless fare system for Cairo Metro Line 3, which is under construction. Thales also will provide communication and other services as part of the deal. The line will have 29 stations over 33 kilometers and is projected to move 5 million passengers daily by 2020. Passengers on Line 3 will use contactless tickets and passes by 2011, the Thales spokesperson says. The vendor expects older parts of the metro system eventually to use contactless fares.
