FaceCash previously relied on a barcode system to present payment details. The June 7 update to its software also added cash-drawer management for merchants.

“With FaceCash you can now replace your cash register, your card terminal, your calculator and, if you choose to send e-mail receipts, your printer and your thermal paper as well,” Aaron Greenspan, Think Computer chief executive, said in a press release. “Whether you use bar codes or [Near Field Communication technology], you still get a better deal, less fraud and top-notch security overall.”

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company’s wallet app, which consumers use to make payments with FaceCash merchants, is available for Android, iPhone and BlackBerry handsets. The Web-based FaceCash Register feature is available for free to merchants that accept FaceCash.

Think Computer in December introduced a digital-coupon system integrated into its FaceCash mobile-payments application that relies on facial recognition to confirm a user’s identity at the point of sale to help combat payment fraud (see story).
