WePay Hires Former eBay Exec John Canfield to Manage Risk

John Canfield is the new vice president of risk management at small-business payment company WePay.

Canfield was formerly senior director of global fraud and risk management for eBay, and will help manage Veda, WePay's new fraud prevention tool. Canfield's hire and WePay's new risk platform come amid rising overall fraud incidents in the payments industry.

Veda uses Facebook Connect and other social media tools to manage identity and fraud risk for WePay's business clients. It can also be used by WePay clients to vet their own customers.

"Our goal in bringing John on as the VP of risk is to leverage his expertise in risk management to make Veda a faster and more intelligent anti-fraud device," said WePay CEO Bill Clerico in a press release. "John's innovative thinking in this area and history of creating great customer experiences is a perfect fit for WePay's culture and strategy."

During his more than seven years at eBay, PayPal's parent company, Canfield led strategic projects that significantly reduced fraud and negative user experiences for eBay Marketplaces, WePay said in a release. Canfield is also the founder of Nimbler, a developer of mobile apps for navigating transit options.
