Hoping to expand its business in Canada, Wincor Nixdorf AG this morning announced it has acquired a controlling interest in a Toronto-based company that specializes in providing point-of-sale hardware to retailers. Connections Canada Inc. also sells broadband solutions that enable retailers to remain in contact with their head offices, banks and to handle debit and credit card transactions, Greg Woods, the company's president, tells ATM&Debit News, a CardLine sister publication. Paderborn, Germany-based Wincor Nixdorf acquired a 51% stake in Connections Canada. Connections Canada says it has installed 20,000 client computers and some 6,000 network servers for more than 800 clients in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Wincor Nixdorf's purchase will enable Connections Canada to expand within the country. "By joining with such a large company, we will be able to offer technology we have not been able to previously offer in Canada," Woods says. Founded in 1987, Connections Canada also has operations in the UK and Malaysia. The firm employs 100 workers.
