Target Offering Coupons via Phone

Target Corp. has begun delivering coupons to customers' mobile phones.

Customers of the Minneapolis retailer can enroll in the service online or by text message.

Links to the coupons are delivered wirelessly and are accessed through a mobile phone's Web browser.

The system generates bar-code images on phones' screens that can be scanned at the point of sale; a single on-screen bar code can include data for multiple coupon offers. Target already lets customers make purchases with gift cards in a similar manner.

"Mobile phones are an integral part of our guests' lives, and mobile coupons are just another way we're providing convenient, on-the-go shopping solutions," Steve Eastman, the president of Target.com, said in a press release Wednesday.
