IBM is building out its business on the African continent.

The computing company said Thursday it has completed a data center for Fidelity Bank in Ghana that features advances in energy efficiency, performance and disaster recovery.

According to IBM, Fidelity Bank sought a center that could relieve pressure on the bank's existing systems and help it grow. The company said the facility, which is housed at the bank's headquarters in Accra, is designed to simplify back-end management processes, provide higher levels of service availability and help Fidelity Bank to deliver a positive customer experience.

The installation is said to include IBM Power 750 servers that run the company's system software for computationally demanding banking applications, the company's System x3850 servers for the bank's general business, and IBM's DS5300 and Storwize V7000 systems for storage.

"We are at a critical period in the history of our bank where we need to have in place the right kind of technology going forward," Edward Effah, Fidelity Bank's chief executive, said in a news release. "With advanced technologies and enhanced business intelligence tools, IBM is helping us to optimize our ability to provide a wider range of services to our rapidly growing client base."

"We are seeing increased momentum in the financial services sector where our clients are looking for transformative technologies that can help them leapfrog several generations of IT platforms, lower operational costs, and automate more processes," Joe Mensah, IBM's general manager for Ghana, added in a news release.

IBM announced recently that RAWBANK, the largest private bank in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has deployed a mix of hardware and software from IBM to extend the range of products and services the bank can offer to its customers.
