ERIE, Penn. – Erie General Electric FCU is calling on area residents to help name the newest resident at the Erie Zoo, a 10-foot-tall giraffe.
The credit union’s “Anything But Fluffy” naming contest has already attracted more than 5,000 entries and is scheduled to run through Oct. 7. The male giraffe arrived in July from the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul, Minn.
Zoo administrators will narrow all the entries to about 15 and 20 before the animal care staff picks three of four finalists. The giraffe – they’ve been calling him “Little Guy” since he arrived in July – will pick the winner himself.
Zoo staff are trying to figure out exactly how that will happen, but one scenario involves attaching the finalist names to boxes of food and seeing which one he eats out of.
