Flooding Causing Problems In Pennsylvania

HERSHEY, Penn. – Heavy rains in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Lee have set off flash flooding across much of central Pennsylvania, affecting CU service and closing at least one office.

The $50-million Hershey FCU was operating with skeleton crews at its three offices due to the floods. Paul Wagner, VP of operations, said the credit union’s Annville location was closed due to flooding in its basement and that damage had yet to be assessed. “I am not aware of any other credit unions impacted, other than having trouble getting staff in,” Wagner said.

Concerns over flash flooding from streams and creeks led the Pennsylvania CU Association to remain closed today, after closing early yesterday. A PCUA spokesperson said a local river was cresting eight feet above flood stage.

Greg Smith, CEO of $3.8-billion Pennsylvania State Employees CU, said its Harrisburg office was OK. “But staff are having difficulty getting in. We’ve had enough rain to last us quite a while but it looks like even more is on the way. When we have weather events like this we leave it to staff to make the call as to whether they can safely get to the office.”
