Florida man indicted for defrauding three credit unions

A Riverview, Fla. man is facing four counts of making false statements to federally insured credit unions, according to documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Defendant Richard E. Bowe, 40, was indicted on Oct. 30 on a quartet of charges and will face a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison if convicted. He was arrested on Nov. 2. and released on bail the same day.

All four counts charge Bowe with knowingly making false statements on loan applications submitted to Florida Central Credit Union, USF Federal Credit Union and Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union.

According to the indictment, Bowe sought loans from all four credit unions between January and early March 2015 but provided false employment information on his loan applications. Bowe claimed that he was a deputy inspector general at the U.S. Army Contracting Command and that he was earning a $14,000 monthly salary.

Bowe also forged information pertaining to his veteran affairs benefits and his military service.

The indictment instructs Bowe to forfeit $96,184.13, which is believed to be the proceeds stemming from his fraudulent loans..

The Tampa Police Department, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General and the Defense Criminal Investigation Service are investigating the case.

A trial date has not been announced at this time.
