For One Small CU, A Host Of Lessons Learned

SPENCERPORT, N.Y.-Nancy Bodhorn, Manager of Spencerport FCU, can't narrow it down to one lesson from the recession, instead saying the CU learned to do a number of things better.

"We pared expenses down to a minimum and then pared them down again," said Bodhorn. "We reduced branch hours, done much more with member financial education, and have been more selective with our charitable giving."

The fine tuning also impacted staff. "We had two wage freezes since 2008, did not hire when a spot opened up, and have implemented cross-training," added Bodhorn.
