PATERSON, N.J. – Thanks to its “Green Machine,” North Jersey FCU said it has been able to continue to offer branch service to members despite ongoing flooding.
The flooding, caused by Hurricane Irene, has made accessing the credit union’s main office here quite difficult, with NJFCU reporting staff has had to park their cars nearly two miles from the main branch. The credit union was without power and phones for six days.
The $197-million CU said it received permission from the city to operate its 40-foot, mobile, bio-diesel-fueled branch known as the “Green Machine” in parking spaces near its main office. The mobile branch has an ATM and two teller windows.
North Jersey FCU employees distributed ice cream sandwiches and frozen fruit bars to people waiting in line to get cash, as The Green Machine offered the only functional ATM for blocks due to the extensive power outages.
