SEATTLE — Participants at the 2015 Legislative Summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) here will be besieged by credit union messaging from a variety of CU trade groups.
The conference, set to take place in Seattle early next month, will include state legislators and their staff members from across the country, and CUNA, CUNA Mutual Group, the American Association of State CU Leagues (AACUL) and CUs from throughout Washington State plan to have credit union messaging prominently on display from the moment conference participants set foot in Seattle.
As soon as conference attendees hit the baggage claim at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport they'll see credit union messaging, which is being displayed there and on the light rail that will carry riders to the convention hotel. Approximately 1.5 million travelers are expected to be exposed to CU messaging through those channels.
Troy Stang, president and CEO of the Northwest CU Association, said in a statement that state legislators need to understand and appreciate the credit union value proposition.
"Our success in delivering a strong and influential message to these state lawmakers on behalf of more than 100 million credit union members can only be made possible by our own ability to collaborate and support one another in this effort months before the first visitors ever arrive," he said.
Jim Nussle, president and CEO of CUNA, noted that the policies and legislation that come about as a result of NCSL have wide-ranging implications for credit unions.
"State lawmakers often move on to the federal level so being able to help them understand the impact of credit unions on a local level will help us garner their support in Congress," said Nussle. "It's also common for laws and policies on the state level to be a testing ground for federal policy. Having a vibrant and innovative state legislative framework helps all credit unions, regardless of charter type."
