CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three men charged with last Thursday’s armed robbery at Dupont Community CU told police they threw the stolen loot out of the window of their getaway car after a dye pack exploded, then went back for the tainted cash later, prompting a high-speed chase with police that resulted in their capture.
One of the suspects allegedly entered the credit union around 5:25 p.m., displayed a pistol and fired a shot into the ceiling. He ordered credit union employees to get on the floor, then ordered tellers to fill a gym-type bag with money. The tellers were able to put a dye pack in with the money.
The robber allegedly fled the credit union into a getaway car driven by one of the suspects and occupied by the other, and the three drove away.
The dye pack exploded as they drove, and they tossed the money, $11,000 in cash, and the dye pack out the window, according to police. They returned a short time later to retrieve the money, and city police responding to the call began chasing them.
Their getaway car crashed, then all three got out and tried to run, before being tracked down by police.
Police found red-stained $11,000 in currency inside the car – matching the amount taken from the credit union.
The suspects were identified as Dewonne Heathington, 22, Kenneth McCullough, 23, and Malcolm Green, 22.
