The $440-million credit union, which has already started construction, is separating the existing space into more offices and connecting a gap on the third floor between two parts of the building.

The three-story Art Deco-style building, made of limestone and polished granite, was built in 1936 and is the only Ann Arbor commercial building designed by famed architect Albert Kahn.

Since the building had been used for the Ann Arbor News it was very open for the editors. To order to accommodate the credit union’s needs, a few offices need to be built. The project is connecting the horseshoe-shaped building by filling in an open space on the third floor.

The credit union purchased the building in June 2010 to use for administrative offices. It was publicly listed for sale for $9.3 million, but the final purchase price was not disclosed.
