Why Navy Federal Is A 'Top Company To Work For'

VIENNA, Va.-Navy FCU was recently named to Fortune Magazine's "Top 100 Companies To Work For" list. The key to winning that honor is keeping employees happy, according to EVP-HR Louise Foreman, since two-thirds of the score is based on Fortune's survey of employees.

"Philosophically, we believe that if we take good care of our employees, they'll take good care of our members," she said.

It's something a lot of companies and credit unions pay lip service to, but Navy Federal takes it well beyond lip service. "We have an employee engagement survey that we do, and we get an 86% response rate to it. Obviously, our employees believe we are going to listen to what they have to say and act accordingly," she suggested. "You have to have formal methods of getting feedback and then actually use that feedback so that employees can see that what they have to say matters."

But right now, one of the things that makes Navy an attractive employer is it's stability. "With everything that has happened in the economy in general and the financial services industry in particular, people are seeking a stable organization that is well managed," she noted. "Next year we will celebrate our 80th anniversary, and we have never had a layoff."
