MADISON, Wis.-Three state pages have been released by the National CU Foundation and will be part of a forthcoming national report from NCUF showing how CUs are making a difference through financial education and counseling. Two CUs Have New Names
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-The $130-million Postal Federal Community CU has changed its name to BluCurrent CU, and said the move eliminates confusion over who can join. The name change effort was led by Weber Marketing Group, Seattle, as was the name change for the merged, $500-million CU created by the combination of Yakima Valley CU and Catholic CU: Solarity Credit Union.
Service CU Donates $125K
PORTSMOUTH, N.H.-Service Credit Union has made a $125,000 donation to the New Hampshire Disaster Relief Fund 2011, which was created to help people affected by recent storms and flooding.
$24K Collected; More Needed
MADISON, Wis.-The National CU Foundation reported it has collected $24,000 to date to help credit unions recover from the effectsof Hurricane Irene, which has been particularly felt in New Jersey, New York and Vermont. The NCUF's online disaster relief system, CUAid.coop, is also assisting credit union people affected by flooding from Tropical Storm Lee in Pennsylvania.
Perry Urges End To MBL Cap
DES MOINES - In remarks to the Iowa CU League's annual meeting here, Texas Gov. and GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry called for elimination of the 12.25% of assets cap on member business loans at credit unions. "Small businesses are having a difficult time getting credit from the large national banks," Perry said. "Local credit unions, you specialize in those smaller loans."

Nearly $23M In Better Choices
HARRISBURG, Penn.--Since the launch of the Credit Union Better Choice loan program in 2006, 81 participating credit unions in the state have now made 49,971 loans totaling more than $23 million. The program has saved borrowers nearly $17 million over using a traditional payday lending product, according to the Pennsylvania CU Association. The Credit Union Better Choice loan has a 90-day term and a $500 limit. For info: www.PaCreditUnions.com.
Two CUs Name New CEOs
BRIGHTON, Mich.-Two credit unions have named new CEOs. The $1.6-billion Lake Trust Credit Union here has named David A. Snodgrass to succeed Stephan L. Winninger and William Thiess as the CEO/president of the credit union.
Snodgrass was previously EVP/chief strategy officer with Affinity FCU.
Meanwhile, in Yorktown, Va.,1st Advantage FCU has named Paul W. Muse as its new president/CEO effective Jan. 1. Muse, who will replace outgoing CEO Casey Duplantier, most recently served as VP-Retail at the $500-million 1st Advantage Credit Union.
White Paper On Data Storage
MADISON, Wis. -The CUNA Technology Council has released a new white paper examining the challenge of balancing data storage needs and costs with safety and integrity. The paper especially explores the options available through cloud computing and other outsourcing of data management, and highlights how two CUs have evolved their data storage procedures. Gray Named Volunteer of Year
BEAVERTON, Ore.--Steve Gray, who recently retired as chair of OnPoint Community CU here, was named Volunteer of the Year in the Summit Awards program jointly hosted by the Oregon CU Foundation and the Washington CU Foundation. While on the board OnPoint has grown to nearly $3-billion in assets from $350 million.
Checks Help Flood Victims
BISMARCK - Representatives of the Credit Union Association of the Dakota's (CUAD) hand delivered more than $36,000 dollars in aid checks to seven Minot area CUs, which in turn will distribute the funds to individual CU employees and members who were severely affected by the flood waters this summer. The checks were made possible by donations to the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) online disaster relief system, CUAid.coop.
Int'l Year of Co-ops Highligted
MADISON, Wis.--The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) has launched a special section on its website at www.woccu.org to provide a platform for CUs to share ideas about cooperative services and ways to celebrate 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives. The International Year of Cooperatives will officially launch the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 1, with a series of meetings and workshops at the U.N.'s New York City headquarters.
Oregon CUs Call Off Merger
BEND, Ore.-- Mid Oregon CU and Springfield, Ore.-based Northwest Community CU said they have cancelled plans to merge.
$600K Goal For Hospitals
RALEIGH, N.C.--The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has pledged to raise at least $600,000 for two Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, one in this state, the other in South Carolina. The effort is expected to take several years, with the North Carolina funds going toward renovation of a rooftop garden at Levin Children's Hospital in Charlotte. Once the Levine project is completed, fundraising would commence for a South Carolina children's hospital, the Foundation said.
BIRMINGHAM/TALLAHASSEE-Analysis by the League of Southeastern Credit Unions has found that in Alabama and Florida, credit unions added $2.2 billion in assets during Q2, along with 28,000 new members across the two states. LSCU CEO Patrick LaPine said deposits were up 7% among Alabama's CUs, 3% in the Sunshine State. In Alabama, member business loans are up 81% or $182 million, and up to 24% to approximately $1 billion in Florida. Delinquencies in both states are also down.
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Seven credit unions affiliated with the Le Levier network in Haiti have launched remittance services through the World Council of CUs' International Remittances Network (IRnet). Haitians can now receive remittances at their local CU through money transfer operator (MTO) Ria Financial Services, Inc., a 100,000-agent network in 131 countries across five continents. According to the World Bank, Haiti annually receives $1.5 billion in remittances.
WASHINGTON-Paul Hazen, president o the National Cooperative Business Association, said he will step down in 2012. Hazen has been with the NCBA for 25 years, the past 12 as president.
