Hoenig's nomination as FDIC vice chairman — which the committee approved by voice vote — will now move to the full Senate floor, where lawmakers are also due to consider the appointments of Martin Gruenberg for FDIC chairman and Thomas Curry for Comptroller of the Currency. If confirmed, all three would hold seats on the FDIC's board of directors.

The former head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Hoenig was nominated by the Obama administration in October. He would succeed Gruenberg, who was previously vice chairman and has run the agency on an acting basis since the July departure of former Chairman Sheila Bair.
