The company's commercial banking arm said Wednesday it has named Shawn McGowen president of the unit's central region.

McGowen, who has served as president of Citigroup Commercial Bank's western region since joining the company in 2011, will add oversight of the bank's commercial strategy in Texas and Illinois to his current responsibilities.

McGowen "has been a leader on several national strategic initiatives, and has demonstrated great success in developing a strong team and winning culture in California and Nevada," William Howle, Citigroup's head of commercial banking in the U.S., said in a press release.

Before joining Citigroup, McGowen held a series of senior sales posts at Wells Fargo (WFC), Wachovia and First Union.

Citigroup said McGowen's appointment is part of a strategy to build up commercial banking operations throughout North America.
