NCR Buying Dataworks of Texas; Software Developer Will Keep Name

NCR Corp. is augmenting its image and item processing services by acquiring financial software developer Dataworks Inc. for an undisclosed amount of cash.

Dataworks, a privately held company based in San Antonio, specializes in information storage, retrieval, and archiving software for the financial industry.

Dayton, Ohio-based NCR has sold Dataworks' systems for banks and clearing houses under the NCR DocuView label for several years.

The acquisition should "expand our strategy and establish closer ties between our own resources and their resources," said Brenda Hemphill, NCR's regional payment solution vice president.

NCR sells check image processing software for high-volume banks. Its main product is ImageMark. Dataworks targets midsize institutions.

Dataworks products are used by more than 1,000 customers throughout the United States and in 15 international markets.

Under terms of the deal, Dataworks would keep its name, management, employees, and operations. The company has 60 employees.

"Becoming part of NCR benefits the customers of both companies," said Paul Dertien, executive vice president of Dataworks. "As business partners, we shared a common technology vision."
