North Carolina banking titan and civic leader John Arthur Forlines Jr. died Tuesday. He was 92.
Forlines led Bank of Granite in Granite Falls for 52 years until he retired in 2006. The $1 billion-asset bank grew from one branch to 21 branches during his tenure.
Forlines also was a chairman of the North Carolina Bankers Association. He was inducted in the North Carolina Business Hall of Fame in 1999 and the North Carolina Bankers Hall of Fame in 2001.
Among his many civic leadership roles, Forlines was a president of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
Raised in Durham, N.C., Forlines graduated from Duke University in 1939, where last year he was honored with the naming of the John A. Forlines Jr. Alumni House.
