SunTrust Unveils New CIO

SunTrust Banks Inc. has named Anil Cheriyan, a senior partner at IBM Global Business Services, as its new chief information officer.

Cheriyan will join the Atlanta company on April 2 and succeeds Tim Sullivan, who has been CIO since 2003 and is retiring, SunTrust said on Friday. Sullivan will remain in his current role through March and then will work part time until the end of the year.

At IBM, Cheriyan, 54, worked with financial services industry clients and led a variety of technology and process re-engineering initiatives. Prior to joining IBM in 2002, he was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting, holding a variety of roles in the systems, customer information, data warehousing and e-business segments.

The departure of Sullivan is part of a recent management shuffle at the bank. James M. Wells III retired as the company’s president and chief executive in April 2011 and was succeeded by William H. Rogers Jr. Cheriyan will report to Rogers. The company has also named a new chief financial officer and corporate treasurer within the last year.
