SAN FRANCISCO -- Wells Fargo & Co. has agreed to sell American Express travelers checks at its 626 bank branches. American Express Travel Related Services Co. said Wells had sold the competing Thomas Cook MasterCard brand. Wells is one of the top 10 sellers of travelers checks in the United States.

The agreement caps a marketing push by American Express in which it has added 1,700 financial institutions as agents. They represent $1.2 billion in annual sales. American Express said its total check sales rose 6% last year to $24 billion.
