Amazon Moving Toward P2P, Mobile Point of Sale

Amazon.com is developing a person-to-person payments system that would compete against the likes of PayPal, according to a job listing on the e-commerce company's website.

The company is also planning to adapt its Kindle e-readers and tablets to be used as mobile point of sale devices, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

For its P2P effort, Amazon is advertising for a senior technical program manager to be based in San Francisco with a job description that calls, in part, for the development of a P2P payment product.

The job listing also mentions products under development that would allow users to buy and sell things "in the real world."

A P2P service may also be a component of a rumored Amazon.com phone, which may be launched this summer, according to a report by the tech news site TechCrunch.

Amazon has made multiple moves in emerging payments technology. It launched a Login and Pay with Amazon feature for online merchants last year, allowing online shoppers to pay at other e-commerce sites with the accounts they use for Amazon.com purchases. The company also offers an Amazon Coins digital currency for purchasing digital content for its Kindle products.

With development of a P2P product, Amazon would go up against the likes of PayPal, Ribbon (which launched P2P functions this week), and others like Square's Square Cash and Acculynk's Payzur.
