Amex Band debuts for payments at US Open

American Express is entering the arena of wearable payments in offering the Amex Band to cardholders attending the US Open tennis tournament in New York.

The contactless payment wristband will allow users to make concession and souvenir purchases at the tournament, and also give them access to other benefits.

Sporting venues have more often been the testing ground for Visa at events like the Olympics or the World Cup Soccer tournament. American Express has been a partner of the United States Tennis Association for 25 years.

“Whether you’re a casual fan or have been attending the US Open for a decade, our goal is to deliver essential benefits and innovative experiences that enhance the overall championship experience and reflect our brand’s best-in-class service platform,” Deborah Curtis, vice president of global experiences and partnerships at American Express, said in a Thursday press release.

“Our partnership with the USTA is a prime example of how we’re backing our card members and fans alike across their biggest passion points and favorite cultural events,” Curtis added.

The US Open starts Aug. 27 and will run through Sept. 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.
