CIBC deletes its mobile wallet, conceding to Apple, Samsung

Canadian bank CIBC has removed its mobile payment app from the Google Play Store and ended support for it, opting to support mobile payments via Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

The bank continues to support bill payments, person-to-person bank account transfers and other routine services through its mobile banking app.

CIBC decided to stop supporting the mobile payment app because of the strong response the bank received from users of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, as reported by MobileSyrup.

In an emailed statment, CIBC told PaymentsSource: "Our recent launches of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay have generated a strong, positive client response. Based on those results and on client feedback on future mobile payments options, CIBC has decided to stop supporting the CIBC mobile payment app, and to shift our focus on growing mobile payments in other areas."

Toronto-based CIBC launched its mobile app in 2012, and it was one of the first Canadian banks to support Apple Pay. CIBC also was in the first wave of Canadian banks to support Samsung Pay beginning last year.

But CIBC kept its options open from the beginning of the industry's shift to mobile payments.

CIBC’s Two years ago CEO Victor Dodig signaled the bank wasn’t wedded to any payments system, and planned to explore several.
