Diebold takes minority stake in mobile app provider Kony

Diebold Nixdorf, on a mission to expand its omnichannel banking and retail offerings, has formed a strategic partnership with Kony Inc., a maker of white-label mobile applications.

North Canton, Ohio-based Diebold aims to incorporate Kony’s technology to support development of more personalized consumer services for banks and retailers, according to a Monday press release.

Orlando, Fla.-based Kony’s technology underpins thousands of mobile apps that manage more than 3.4 billion user sessions annually, and the company’s cross-platform, cloud-based solutions will help Diebold enrich omnichannel services for retailers in self-checkout and point of sale locations, and for banks in branches and other digital channels, Diebold said in the release.

Kony will support Diebold’s services through open APIs, including helping Diebold develop custom toolkits for users of its DN Mobile product that’s used by financial institutions and merchants, Diebold added.

“We are extending our leadership in systems of engagement all the way from the branch and store through to cloud-connected mobile applications for the consumer,” said Alan Kerr, Diebold’s senior vice president of software at Diebold Nixdorf, in the release.

In addition to its minority stake, Diebold will have a seat on Kony’s board of directors, Diebold said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
