An electronic purse for national identification cards in Oman has gone live, France-based Gemalto NV, which provided technology for the effort, said in a statement Wednesday. The smart card vendor said it supplied the technology to Bank Muscat, the issuer, and the Royal Oman Police. The technology includes the e-purse, "post-issuance" activation of the application and "the centralized system to manage the transactions," Gemalto says.  Citizens can use the e-purse to pay for birth and marriage certificates, car registration, drivers' licenses and visa applications, the statement says. The card also enables retail purchases from some supermarkets, and eventually will be used for parking and tolls, Gemalto says.
