Ebanx, Alibaba combine physical, digital shopping in Brazil

Brazilian payments provider Ebanx is working with Alibaba Group to test a retail store that combines physical and virtual showcases to allow consumers to obtain Chinese technology products.

The AliExpress Shopping Experience store will feature online and offline shopping experiences through a 32-meter-long panel in Shopping Mueller, one of the largest shopping malls in Curitiba, Brazil.

QR codes link store visitors to Alibaba's AliExpress online platform, where payments are accepted and products shipped through regular mail delivery.

Alibaba Group provides the largest online marketplace in China, and its affiliate Ant Financial provides the popular Alipay mobile payment network.

“We are excited to join the Ebanx initiative to bring together the online and offline experience," Kang Huang, country leader of AliExpress Brazil, said in a Wednesday press release. "AliExpress is one of the most popular e-commerce platforms in Brazil and we have always explored ways to boost the integration of digital and physical environments, ultimately looking to offer our consumers more choice, fun, and convenience while they shop.”

Consumers at the interactive showcase at the AliExpress store use touch-screen panels to navigate the various products offered through the AliExpress. An LED screen panel at 5 meters long and 2.5 meters high exhibits more information about the products.

Certain products, such as smartphones, are on display for consumers to test prior to purchasing through the AliExpress website.

Competition among Chinese sellers in Brazil has grown in recent years, and Ebanx wants to make more products available to consumers.

"Today, Ebanx serves about 150 companies from China, which are selling to Latin American countries using our payments solutions," Andre Boaventura, partner and marketing director at Ebanx, said in the release. "In 2018 alone, the number of Chinese merchants doubled compared to 2017."

Ebanx, founded in 2012, operates throughout Latin America and has offices in Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, the U.K. and the U.S. The company offers end-to-end, cross-border e-commerce payment services.

Ebanx says it has helped more than 1,000 merchants expand services into Latin America, citing AliExpress, Pipedrive, Airbnb and Spotify as clients using Ebanx payment services.
