FIS, minor league ball clubs team up for payments

Financial technology provider Fidelity National Information Services (FIS) has entered an agreement that will help create the "ballpark of the future" with Minor League Baseball.

The agreement calls for FIS to provide software to the 160 minor league teams across the U.S. and Canada, with the opportunity to market and sell its advanced payment, loyalty and other business technology to the teams.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based FIS says it will concentrate on providing solutions for ballpark operations, merchant services and loyalty/rewards. The agreement will help teams simplify payments for fans, track employee expenses, streamline team travel and purchases, and provide real-time payments for club employees.

“Minor League Baseball is the backbone of America’s pastime," Bruce Lowthers, president of global retail payments division for FIS, said in a March 27 press release. "We are thrilled to support this forward-looking organization in making the ballpark experience one that draws more people to games and encourages them to return over and over.”

From payroll to payments and data management to loyalty, FIS looks forward to supporting minor league baseball to create the "ballpark of the future,” Lowthers said.

FIS also will work with St. Petersburg, Fla.-based MiLB Advanced Media to create a fan loyalty program for the organization.

“In our quest to be a dynamic leader in sport and entertainment, we place heightened emphasis on aligning with companies that buy into our vision for the future and are committed to helping us get there,” David Wright, Minor League Baseball’s chief marketing and commercial officer, said in the release.

Teaming with FIS allows the organizations to serve "our robust ownership, tech-savvy fan base and overall scale" with the FIS payment and loyalty services, Wright added.

Earlier this year, FIS teamed up with Verifone to establish a rewards points redemption program at the point of sale, allowing consumers with loyalty-linked cards to redeem points at the time of a transaction at participating merchants.
