Scotland’s Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), will be the first transit operator to test Rambus Ecebs’ new virtual ticketing solution, enabling riders on the 121-year-old Glasgow Subway to download a virtual ticket and tap and pay with a smartphone.
The pilot will launch in the second half of this year, run by a joint partnership between Glasgow-based SPT and Glasgow-based Nevis Technologies, leveraging Host Card Emulation (HCE) via Rambus Ecebs’ new
Ecebs’ services use HCE to securely provision payment credentials stored in the cloud—versus in the secure element within a handset—to a smartphone, bypassing the need to visit a kiosk, according to the release. For transit operators, Ecebs’ Ticketing app provides the opportunity to collect data and other analytics information about rider to optimize ticket offers, pricing, staffing and routes, Ecebs noted in the release.
“Travelers can securely select, purchase, download and use their ticket anywhere on the Glasgow Subway,” said Eric Stewart, SPT’s assistant chief executive, in the release.
The pilot will launch this spring with a select group of riders on the Glasgow Subway, the world’s third-oldest subway after London’s Underground and the Budapest Metro.
