Motorists in Kolkata , India, now can pay their traffic fines on the spot with credit cards, a spokesperson for the city's Road Transport Office tells CardLine Global. Officials who collect fines will use nonproprietary readers based on technology developed by Simputer Trust, an India-based nonprofit. "What we are using is a modification of the Simputer," the spokesperson says, noting the readers also can read driver's licenses. The office's central server will keep records of card and cash payments for fines, which enables officials to assess higher penalties for repeat offenders, the spokesperson says. Offenders who use the service receive receipts.  The system is not available for debit card users. A typical speeding fine in Kolkata costs about 100 rupees (US$2 or 1.40 euros), according the office.
