Ingenico will provide Crédit Agricole with payment terminals that enable contactless and other payment methods, including chip-based cards, magnetic-stripe cards or through signature capture, the companies stated Jan. 17.
Crédit Agricole has issued up to 200,000 contactless payment cards to its customers for use on Ingenico compact iW1251 wireless terminals. Ingenico has already installed 1,500 terminals for use in the project.
Cardholders will be able to initiate contactless transactions of less than 20 euros ($26 U.S.) by holding the card close to the payment terminal. The transaction will not require a PIN or signature to complete.
The contactless payment project is on a fast track, as Crédit Agricole says it hopes to reach 600,000 contactless cards and 5,500 terminals by the end of the first quarter of 2013.
